We have, rightly so, been focused on the head coaching movement this carousel up to this point. We are seeing hires happening earlier than usual and guys trying to assemble a staff and rosters in an expedited manner. But that is neglecting the coordinators, more of whom will move then head coaches in a given cycle. These are often times both the young and up and coming wunderkinds but also the fall guys when a head coach needs a sacrificial lamb to save his job. Here are five offensive coordinators who could be in high demand and move this offseason. Note: Buster Faulkner was originally on this list but was removed when he took the offensive coordinator job at Florida.
Baker has been one of the hotter coordinator names so far on this carousel. His offense has been effective, and ECU (8-4, 6-2 American) boast one of the best wide receiver rooms in all of the country. They are the No. 13 in offense in America, averaging 465 yards a game. Baker is a former assistant at North Texas, USC and Ole Miss.
I think with his numbers this year and past, that Blake Harrell is resigned to losing him to a Power Four school. He has been mentioned for Ole Miss and South Carolina as the possible play caller for each. He is almost certain to move in the coming days or weeks.
Davis has been with Eric Morris through three spots. From Incarnate Word to Washington State and now North Texas (11-2, 7-1 American). This year North Texas had the top offense in the nation, averaging 504 yards per game. After losing on Friday in the American Conference title game, Morris is moving to Oklahoma State as the new head coach.
Davis will not be his replacement with the Mean Green, Neal Brown will be. Davis certainly will have the option to follow Morris to Stillwater, Okla. but he may also have greater options, if he chooses to look.
The Monarchs (9-3, 6-2 Sun Belt) averaged 460 yards a game this season, led by QB Colton Joseph who threw for 2,600 yards and ran for more than 1,000 yards. ODU is Decker’s first FBS assistant job, but he could be in demand this year.
A caveat here is Joseph has entered the portal, if you want to pair a coordinator and QB combo together, they would make a lot of sense together. Decker has been solid at multiple schools with lesser resources that will appeal to some.
The most well-known coach on this list, Petrino spent the second half of this year as the interim head coach at Arkansas (2-10, 0-8 SEC) where things did not turn around. A good performance by him and he’d have likely been the next head coach there but that will now be Ryan Silverfield.
Petrino is a veteran who has been awesome on offense at every stop. Even his Arkansas team this year was top 25 and averaged 454 yards a game. It was on the defensive side they were atrocious. If you can handle the personality and baggage, he’s a known commodity and will get results. He’s the one guy on this list who could end up as a head coach, likely at the Group of 5 level, or a head coach at a P4 school.
The Gamecocks (8-5, 7-1 Conference USA) are the fourth-leading rushing team in America, averaging 258 yards a game on the ground. Cam Cook was one of the most impressive RBs in the country and Caden Creel rejuvenated the offense when he took over.
On Friday, Jax State lost in the conference title game but a bowl game awaits. Trickett is a former OC at Marshall and Florida Atlantic, not to mention an assistant at Georgia Southern. Teams will see what he did this year with a new coaching staff and revamped roster and be impressed.
