Deion Sanders entered the NFL as the No. 5 overall pick in 1989 and built a Hall of Fame career as a shutdown cornerback, return specialist and occasional receiver, finishing with eight Pro Bowls, eight All‑Pro selections, the 1994 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, two Super Bowl rings and induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
Super Bowl XXIX was a postseason apex for the San Francisco 49ers’ passing attack, with Steve Young throwing six touchdown passes en route to MVP honors and Jerry Rice catching 10 passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns as Sanders' 49ers defeated the San Diego Chargers 49-26.
The game’s box score reflects the one‑sided nature of the contest, yet it was one off-the-field purchase from Sanders that has now brought the game back into the spotlight.
Speaking on the "Home Grown with David & Derek Carr" podcast on Thursday, Sanders fielded a question from Derek Carr on his craziest purchase while in the NFL.
"Probably a Lamborghini Diablo," Sanders said. "We were playing against the Chargers for the Super Bowl and I hit a lot of incentives, so I'm like, 'Hey, I'm going to treat myself.' So, we're are practice in Miami, I buy the Lamborghini in Miami and I told them, 'Drive the Lamborghini up, park it on the curb at the hotel and leave the door open.'"
"So we're pulling up there, and Eric Davis, we're on the defensive bus, you know, clowning and joking, he says, 'Man, that's a bad Lamborghini. It ain't but one fool that would do that. It's got to be your car, you're the only fool to do something like that.' And I bought myself a Lamborghini in Miami at the Super Bowl," Sanders added.
Sanders reported net worth is currently around $60 million, having earned roughly $45.65 million from his NFL salaries and $13.2 million from his playing days in the MLB.
After retiring, Sanders moved between broadcasting and coaching, launching Prime Prep and later leading Jackson State to national attention before accepting the Colorado Buffaloes head‑coaching job in 2022.
His college coaching record at Colorado sits at 15-16, including a strong 2024 season in which the program went 9-4 and played in the Alamo Bowl, led by Sanders' son and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, Shedeur Sanders.
In March, Sanders signed a five-year, $54 million contract extension with Colorado, which made him one of the highest-paid coaches in college football.
