Update (5:35 p.m. CT): The Iowa State Cyclones shared an update on Brahmer’s injury around 5:00 p.m. CT, writing, “Ben was transported to Mary Greeley Medical Center after suffering an injury in the fourth quarter of today’s Iowa State-Arizona State game. He was evaluated and treated and has been discharged from the hospital.”

Original Story: Things got really quiet in Ames on Saturday after Iowa State tight end Benjamin Brahmer took a brutal shot and collapsed on the field.

It happened after a collision with Keith Abney III, and the second Brahmer went down, it was clear something wasn’t right. He stayed on the turf for several minutes as medical staff rushed in and eventually carted him off the field. No one was talking. Everyone was taken aback. Just a lot of stunned silence as one of Iowa State’s key offensive weapons got loaded up and taken out of the stadium.

Here’s what it looked like:

Brahmer’s been a steady piece in what Iowa State’s trying to do this season. At 6-foot-6 and 260 pounds, he brings real presence in the passing game and is a strong blocker in the trenches. He’s not just a rotational guy. He matters. Losing him, even short-term, throws a wrench into how the Cyclones operate.

There hasn’t been an official update on his condition yet, but the way it played out wasn’t encouraging. You could see it on the players’ faces. The guys were shaken. Abney looked rattled, too, which tells you how much impact that collision had in real time.

For Iowa State, this is a moment that tests your depth and your resolve. If he’s out for any length of time, someone else is going to have to step up in a hurry, because this conference doesn’t give anyone time to regroup.

Arizona State wound up with the win, with a final score of 24-19. Iowa State has now lost four straight and likely one of its best players for the foreseeable future.
