A surprise Big Ten school could be favorite to land former five-star quarterback

Following a disappointing freshman season, UCLA quarterback Dante Moore has entered the transfer portal.

A five-star recruit and the No. 5-ranked player from the class of 2023 per the 247Sports composite rankings, Moore threw for 1,610 yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions in nine games with the Bruins this fall.

Though his numbers don’t exactly jump off the page, Moore is sure to have his pick of potential new schools and according to The Athletic, a front-runner has already emerged for his services.

“Michigan State [provides] a clearer path to the starting job, with its top three quarterbacks all entering the transfer portal,” The Athletic’s Austin Meek wrote. “…The Spartans will have options, but Moore should be at the top of their wish list. … The picture is crowded enough that Michigan State might be the more logical fit.”

Not only is Michigan State breaking in a new head coach in Jonathan Smith, it’ll also be breaking in a new quarterback after Katin Houser, Noah Kim and Sam Leavitt all entered the transfer portal over the last week.

Should Moore sign with the Spartans, he’ll have virtually zero competition for the starting job. Michigan State has no other scholarship quarterbacks on its roster and the only incoming signal caller it has is three-star QB Henry Hasselbeck, the son of former Super Bowl-winning QB Matt Hasselbeck – one of just eight commitments in MSU’s 2024 recruiting class.

During his introductory news conference, Smith acknowledged having to rely on the transfer portal to plug some holes on Michigan State’s roster.

“We’ll use the different avenues to build our roster,” Smith said, via MLive.com. “I’m talking about long-term sustainability – yes, we want to be heavy on the high school side but you build your roster through the transfer portal. … I’ll say this, not just specifically about the quarterback position but in general, this day in age in college football, there’s opportunities there in regards to weighing your options and fresh starts somewhere else.”
