As we inch closer to the College Football Playoff, many upsets have shaken up the ACC leaderboard as many teams try to push for a CFP spot late in the season. LB Kam Robinson, of No. 14 Virginia (8-1, 5-0) , and QB Haynes King, of No. 17 Georgia Tech (8-1, 5-1), are my two ACC players of the week as they played exceptionally to either keep their team in the game or secure a win.
On Nov. 1 the Yellow Jackets faced off against the NC State (5-4, 2-3) in Raleigh, N.C. and put on an offensive show. Both teams’ defenses did not help, and the game ended with 84 total points. While King suffered the loss, he still led the offense to 36 points and remains a top name in the Heisman Trophy conversation.
Against the Wolfpack, King had an amazing performance passing 25-of-35 for a season high 408 yards and two TDs. He added on an additional 103 yards and two TDs with his legs. After another week of holding this Georgia Tech team on his back, King and the Yellow Jackets finally lost, but I would not be worried. With King’s consistent high-level performance, the chances for Georgia Tech to make and even win the ACC Championship are still high.
On Nov. 1 the Virginia Cavaliers faced off against the California Golden Bears (5-4, 2-3) in an important game for the Cavaliers. The Cavaliers have been pushing hard for an ACC championship and are the only team in the ACC without a conference loss.
Robinson played a huge role in the Cavaliers victory with six tackles, 0.5 sacks, and a pick-six to seal the 31-21 win. The significance of the pick-six pushed him to be the ACC Defensive Player of the Week in my book. In an attempt to stay in the game and hand the Cavaliers their first conference loss, Cal threw a devastating pick which gave Virginia a double-digit lead.
As King leads the Georgia Tech offense and Robinson leads the Virginia defense, these two players emerged as captains of the top contenders in the ACC. As the Yellow Jackets enter the bye week, they look forward to a simple matchup against a weak Boston College (1-8, 0-5) squad. The Cavaliers enter Week 11 against a Wake Forest (5-3, 2-3) team who has given many strong teams a run for their money this season. Look forward to more exciting matchups in the ACC as we close in on the end of this season.
