After ripping Caleb Williams, Merril Hoge claims Drake Maye isn’t a first-round pick in the upcoming draft
Ken Ruinard-USA TODAY Sports

Former running back Merril Hoge dropped another bomb by claiming that Drake Maye, the North Carolina quarterback, is not qualified enough to become the first-round draft prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft. He pointed his fingers at the inconsistency level of the college football quarterback who threw multiple interceptions last season.

I wouldn’t touch Maye. I wouldn’t grab Maye. I wouldn’t grab him in the first round, and there’s a bunch of things that bother me. He’s extremely inconsistent. His accuracy, his processing are inconsistent. He’s not extremely athletic. Hoge via The Sports Junkies podcast

Drake Maye’s arm strength created a hue and cry among the football associates. His latest 83-yard-throw amazed the CFB enthusiasts. However, the former running back is not pleased with the arm strength of the QB as he found Maye a bit stiff.

I think I’m finding [him] more stiff. He’s got a longer throwing motion, which allows more hits in our league…and I’m just bothered by it.

Drake Maye, Caleb Williams, and Jayden Daniels are the favorites for the top draft prospects for this edition. However, Merril, who is infamous for his shrewd remarks, is not happy with two of the three quarterbacks. A few days back, the former RB also had a controversial take on Caleb Williams. The RB suggested that Caleb Williams is not qualified enough to replace Justin Fields.

Merril Hoge advocated for Justin Fields in the Chicago Bears squad

Amid all the trade rumors of the quarterback Justin Fields, the former RB claimed that the Bears should not replace Justin Fields with Caleb Williams. He wholeheartedly praised Fields by saying that he has a new coordinator and can bear fruits if he gets an opportunity in the coming season.

It is unfair to Justin Fields. He has new coordinator, new coordinator, new coordinator. There is no possible way you can know about your guy when you do that. It's the worst thing that can happen to any player, especially a quarterback--When Justin came out, the one thing that I thought he had . . . was inexperience. He just needed more experience. He lacked that. But what I have seen in Justin Fields, from my evaluation, is that there is enough growth and hope there that I would not let him go, because I see enough there.

However, the former RB has not said anything negative regarding the Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels. Instead, he advocated that the Washington Commanders should go for Daniels. Seemed he was impressed by the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner.
