Here's everything NFL Draft fans need to know about Indiana linebacker Aiden Fisher:
Height: 6-1
Weight: 233
Age: 22
A supercomputer in human form, Fisher’s football IQ and processing are off the charts, as he frustrates his opponents with the ability to know what’s coming before the snap and be in position to make the play. He’s got the instincts and spatial awareness to make plays in every direction, flowing downhill to stuff the run and dropping into passing lanes to break up throws between the numbers. His preparation and knowledge of the game benefit his defensive teammates, as he’s able to call out formation tells and down/distance tendencies that give his unit a valuable advantage. He’s tough and physical at the point of attack, and a sure tackler who doesn’t miss often in the open field. Fisher’s leadership skills are highly valued in the huddle, on the sideline, and in the locker room.
In man coverage, Fisher’s lack of elite athleticism can be tested by more explosive running backs and tight ends who can stress him vertically or with sharp route cuts that force him to change direction on a dime. He can be too aggressive and get sucked into the trenches by play-action fakes, and he lacks the explosiveness and speed to recover in time to avoid big plays in the voids he leaves behind. He can get washed out in the run game by bigger blockers that expose his below-average play strength at the point of attack, leading to a habit of trying to avoid head-on blocks, which can leave him out of position and open up free lanes for the runner.
Fisher has some athletic limitations that put a cap on his NFL ceiling, but coaches and scouts will still love the intelligence, instincts and intangibles he brings to the table. At worst, Fisher should have a long and successful career as a valued backup and core special teamer, but he could find a starting role in the right defense that can mitigate his lack of speed and athleticism while taking advantage of the mental prowess he brings.
