Alabama QB Transfers to Play For Former Nick Saban Assistant

More former Alabama Crimson Tide players are finding new homes this week and that includes an outgoing quarterback.

Dylan Lonergan committed to Boston College on Tuesday, per Hayes Fawcett of On3 . Lonergan will have three years of eligibility remaining with the ACC program and will be reunited with BC head coach and former Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien.

Lonergan was recruited by both O'Brien and Charles Kelly as a four-star prospect in Alabama's 2023 recruiting class. The Snellville, GA, product barely saw the field through his two seasons in Tuscaloosa, buried behind both Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson on the depth chart.

With the nation's No. 2 QB Keelon Russell set to arrive on campus in January, it made sense for Lonergan to enter the transfer portal in search of a better opportunity for more playing time. BC was quickly cited as a "school to watch" for his services, but he he did have a brief flirtation with the University of Georgia. Ultimately, Chestnut Hill is where he decided to land for a fresh start in 2025.

Clocking in a 6-foot-2 and 214 pounds, the strong-armed QB has the build of a potential future NFL quarterback and will be under the guidance of a former NFL head coach/general manager. With former BC QB Thomas Castellanos transferring to Florida State last week, there's a strong chance for Lonergan to walk in as the Day 1 starter when the Eagles kick the 2025 season off against Fordham next August.

O'Brien's first season at Boston College this year was a relative success, posting a 7-5 record where they earned a trip to the Pinstripe Bowl against Nebraska on December 28. Given the nature of the ACC where teams can quickly climb into conference contention, there's a possibility that the B.O.B-Lonergan connection could elevate that program to heights not seen since the Matt Ryan era of the late-2000's.
