Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver Ryan Williams is one of the most dynamic players in college football. In fact, outside of Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith, he may be the best wide receiver in college football.
That's what made the narratives around Williams so strange after the first two weeks of the college football season.
Alabama, as a whole, struggled in the Week 1 loss to Florida State, but Williams was notably and uncharacteristically shaky. He ultimately had to leave the game with a concussion, but Williams caught just 5-of-11 targets against FSU for 30 yards with three drops.
Again, it was uncharacteristic.
The sophomore from Mobile, Alabama, took Week 2 off but then got back into action in the Crimson Tide's dominant 38-14 win over Wisconsin in Week 3.
Williams again looked like the player we knew him to be as a freshman. He caught five passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns. One of those touchdowns looked like this:

A fellow wide receiver, senior Germie Bernard, clearly took exception to any criticism of his teammate after the loss to FSU. Following the win over Wisconsin, Bernard appeared on a podcast called "The Next Round," where he defended Williams.
"First of all, everybody [has] seen what Ryan can do," Bernard said (h/t 247Sports). "I don't understand why people sit here and doubt him after the one game that he has."
Has Williams been perfect this season? No. Absolutely not. In fact, if Nick Saban were still the head coach in Tuscaloosa, he might have gotten an earful after his handful of drops against Florida State and then the drop of a touchdown he had against Wisconsin.
Bernard explained that for a young and talented receiver like Williams, it's all part of the growth process. Drops happen to wide receivers. It's just something that has to consistently improve for a wideout to reach his true potential.
And as far as that potential is concerned, the elder Alabama wideout clearly has no questions about his teammate.
"It was so great for him to go out there and hush some people up. A lot of people were doubting him and stuff like that," Bernard said. "I know who Ryan Williams is. I know the plays he can make. Praise and blame are the same thing. That's how we look at stuff. It was good for him to continue to have a level mind and continue to work through that."
