Ryan Williams didn't wait long to make one of the bigger splashes we have seen from an Alabama Crimson Tide true freshman.
But while his individual success was noteworthy, the lack of wins in Tuscaloosa crept into his mind this offseason.
He is vowing to make sure it won't happen again...
“We know there’s pressure, but we have more pressure on ourselves than anything that anyone else can put on us,” Williams told Pete Nakos of On3. “Going into the season, it means a lot to me because in my entire life, Alabama has won 10 games. And my first season here, that was the only time we haven’t won 10 games since I’ve been alive. You can only imagine what losing to Michigan did to me. A lot of the other guys during our winter workouts and spring ball — it’s been all attack, all kill. Because we all have the same mindset. We know what we want to accomplish. We’re some men on a mission.”
While I understand Williams' point by using the Michigan loss as motivation since that is what kept them from double-digit wins, the truth is, a meaningless bowl game shouldn't have weighed that much on a 10-win season.
Losses against Vanderbilt and the drudgery that occurred against Oklahoma should be what drives Ryan Williams and his teammates. Because those are the kinds of losses that not only can't happen again, but that won't be tolerated. Losses that will end the Kalen DeBoer experiment before it ever really began.
So it's good to hear that Williams and everyone else who dons Crimson and White are motivated to not repeat the results of 2024. The standard came up short. Year one on the job was far from easy, wih Kalen DeBoer saying as much on Tuesday, when he took a shot at other team's schedule.
But none of it matters, as now, Alabama has to win, with pressure coming from every direction.
