Alabama's given firm date for flip decision from five-star prospect they're favored to land from Big Ten
USA TODAY Sports

After being committed to the USC Trojans for nearly a year, it was surprising when five-star linebacker Xavier Griffin suddenly recommitted two weeks ago. Shortly after, he confirmed an official visit with the Alabama Crimson Tide

It seemed notable at the time, and we made sure to detail that. Now, Alabama has a date when they'll find out if they've successfully flipped the Georgia native.

Griffin will make his decision on June 29 after he makes his way to Ohio State, Alabama, Texas, and then Florida State.

On3's commitment predictor, which is not a great measure of future decisions, has Alabama with a slight lead over the Seminoles and Buckeyes in the race. Obviously, this could swing in a significant manner.

Alabama has already snagged four-star edge-rusher Jamarion Matthews from Gainesville High School, which is where Griffin attends.

On3's Steve Wiltfong reported the following:

Christian Robinson has been leading the charge in recruiting Griffin to Alabama. It’s a program he’s always loved. He has family in Tuscaloosa. I think the other three need to make a move on the Tide in the final month.

Alabama is in great position to land several five-stars and top targets going into summer. The prediction in favor of the Crimson Tide for Griffin joins five-star forecasts for receiver Cederian Morgan and Ezavier Crowell. Beyond those prospects, I still have Alabama predicted for prized tight end target Mack Sutter. I haven’t predicted it, but I also think the Crimson Tide are in strong standing with five-star edge Anthony Tank Jones.

Andrew Ivins of 247Sports favorably compared Griffin to recent Alabama star linebacker and 2025 first-round pick Jihaad Campbell.

Multi-faceted defender with a top-flight testing profile that should offer both on- and off-ball linebacker as he can rush the passer and stack against the run while also dropping back into coverage. Lanky and lean at this stage, but should undergo a major physical transformation in the coming years as he’s on the younger side for the grade and equipped with larger features. Fires out of both a two- and three-point stance in the blink of an eye and will get around obstacles with his slick agility and lateral quickness. Possess true sideline-to-sideline range and will make stops in pursuit with his gap-closing burst. Must keep evolving and developing craft while improving play strength, but projects as a potential impact player in the Big Ten or SEC that can fit into a variety of different schemes with his athletic juice and alignment flex.
