American World Cup victory sets up epic sports day on Saturday

After a thrilling 1-0 victory over Iran, the U.S. is on to the Round of 16 on Saturday, a day that's filled with high-stakes action for sports fans.

The day kicks off with the USA’s first match in the knockout round since the team’s 2-1 loss to Belgium in the 2014 World Cup. Netherlands is the early favorite, per Oddschecker.

Could we be in store for "Upset Saturday?"

If any of the top teams in college football lose (as well as the Netherlands), the day certainly will earn that title.

The college football world will take center stage after U.S.-Netherlands, with the Big 12, SEC, Big Ten, and ACC championships following the World Cup match.

TCU (12-0, 9-0 in Big 12) plays Kansas State (9-3, 7-2 in Big 12) at 12 p.m. EST. A win guarantees TCU will play in the College Football Playoff, while a loss opens the door for the committee to stick a dagger through TCU's chest.

The stakes involved in the SEC title game were lessened when LSU (9-3, 6-2 in SEC) lost to Texas A&M (5-7, 2-6 in SEC). Georgia (12-0, 8-0 in SEC) will lock up the No. 1 overall seed with a victory. A loss could drop the Bulldogs as far as No. 4 depending on the rest of the results from championship weekend.

Michigan (12-0, 9-0 in Big Ten) is jockeying for a top-two finish at the very least and would jump to No. 1 with a Georgia loss. Facing Purdue (8-4, 6-3 in Big Ten), the Wolverines don't have a marquee opponent, but like Georgia, the team needs a win to solidify its ranking.

The ACC title game is the only one without playoff ramifications after Clemson (10-2, 8-0 in ACC) lost its last game and North Carolina (9-3, 6-2 in ACC) lost its last two.

It does mean we get an extra game to watch North Carolina QB Drake Maye, who should enter next season as a top contender for the Heisman Trophy.

It all combines to form one of the more exciting days in sports in some time. By the time the day ends, it could also be one of the most memorable.
