Indiana football lands ‘surprise’ signing of James Madison running back Ty Son Lawton

Indiana football head coach Curt Cignetti and the program landed their first ‘surprise’ signing of the day during National Signing Day for college football.

As it was announced on the Indiana football Twitter page, former James Madison running back Ty Son Lawton decided to join coach Cignetti and transfer to play for the Hoosiers.

Lawton played one season at James Madison University after spending his prior five seasons at Stony Brook (2018-22). He comes to the Indiana program as a graduate transfer. He has one year eligibility remaining with having two redshirt years plus a COVID year.

In his one season at James Madison, Lawton compiled a total of 126 carries, 568 yards and six touchdowns. He has a career 583 carries for 2,660 yards and 26 total touchdowns.

Before he started his college career at Stony Brook, Lawton was a 2017 All-City selection, Rushed for over 2,600 yards in high school, and helped Curtis HS win back-to-back NYC PSAL championships in 2016 and 2017.

Lawton joins a stacked Indiana football running back room alongside Trent Howland, Josh Henderson and Wake Forest transfer Justice Ellison.

Indiana football is up to a total of 17 total players that have signed their National Letter of Intent.
