UCF AD suggests government help NCAA financially during pandemic

The coronavirus has caused professional and college sports to be postponed, and there's no telling on when they may return.

While professional sports will most likely be in good shape financially during this difficult period of time, college sports are in a different position.

The NCAA only has so much money to shell out, and University of Central Florida athletic director Danny White thinks the government should step in and help out financially until things return to normal.

“It’s going to be somewhere in the $3-$500,000 range, it just depends on how many of them elect to do it," White said, according to the Orlando Sentinel's Matt Murschel. "The way that they did it was smart because it’s a one-time expense. As we look into next year, I think there are going to be a lot of scenarios where there are one-time challenges. We’ve just got to find a way and hopefully, there’s ways with federal and state support, one-time relief to help us get through the next 12 months or so.”

White added that it'll be pretty difficult for UCF and many colleges to figure out their budgets and save money going forward because many schools rely on athletic ticket sales to bring in money.

With the NCAA deciding to grant another year of eligibility to spring athletes, hopefully things go back to normal sooner rather than later.
