With the college football season in full swing, we know that it can be tough to keep up with all of the news from Saturday. You're bound to miss a few hours of the action when you have to go out to stock up on snacks and Ohio State-branded toilet paper. So to help you out, here are five of the top stories from Week 3 of the 2016 college football season, as explained by noted "Carpool Karaoke" guests the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
"Can't Stop": No. 18 Notre Dame Gashed By No. 12 Michigan State
Apparently nobody told the Notre Dame defense that this game was more than just a read-through. In an eight-point loss that was much more dominant than the scoreline might suggest, Notre Dame simply could not stop Michigan State's rushing attack. The Spartans had a total of 260 rushing yards, including 100 courtesy of Gerald Holmes, who picked up most of that yardage on an amazing 73-yard touchdown run. The Fighting Irish simply couldn't stop the wave, and it seems to have dashed their playoff hopes.
Give it away, give it away, give it away now. That 22-point lead on Florida State last week? Give it away, Ole Miss. That 21-point lead you had on your bitter rival Alabama? Give that away too. This is the second week in a row in which Ole Miss has jumped out to a three-score lead and then proceeded to, well, give it away — a first for a Power 5 team in the past 10 years.
Now, not to take anything away from the Rebels, because it is impressive to jump out to these starts, but that's not worth anything if they can't close out these games. It seems like they haven't been taking Anthony Kiedis's advice: Don't stop, continue!
"Hard to Concentrate": SC State's Ahmaad Harris Has A Brain Fart On Kickoff
Between all the hustle, bustle and muscle of a football game, sometimes it really is hard to concentrate. South Carolina State return man Ahmaad Harris learned that the hard way this past week in a game against Clemson, in which he, um, did this:
In a week that also featured a whole bunch of players, well, DeSean-ing and dropping the ball before the goal line, Ahmaad's flub stands out, in part, for its relatability. It's clear that he simply forgot to take a knee in the end zone or simply thought he already did before flipping the ball to the ref. There's a moment when you can see Ahmaad's head swivel around, realizing what he's done, at which point it was too late to do anything. And though it may be embarrassing, the truth is, we've all been there. We just weren't on the football field.
Why do people keep scheduling North Dakota State? The Bison have made a name for themselves as minor kings in the FCS, unafraid to upset top-ranked teams, and that's exactly what they did this past Saturday against the 13th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes. This is the first FCS win over a ranked FBS opponent so far this season, and for an Iowa squad that was an early favorite to at least compete for the Big Ten title, overlooking the "minor thing" that is the North Dakota State Bison proved to be a very, very fatal mistake.
That said, it's early in the season. Hawkeye fans should trust that their team will readjust.
What is there to say about this game other than the obvious? Quarterback Lamar Jackson is, indeed, a dirty bird. And he's got plenty more dirty birds backing him up. Together, they did something very, very dirty to the then-second-ranked team in the nation, putting up 63 points and winning by a margin of 43.
The Cardinals were chirpin' and burpin' all game, putting up an astonishing 314 rushing yards (a full 146 of those came from Jackson) and picking apart the FSU defense in the most lopsided loss by a No. 2 team since 1944. Noles fans, nobody is blaming you for being disturbed.
