The NCAA transfer portal is in full swing after opening earlier this week, seeing a long list of talented players entering to hopefully find a new home. One of the more interesting entrants late on Tuesday was Oklahoma linebacker Dasan McCullough. He is the son of Notre Dame running back coach Deland McCullough, who is widely regarded as one of the very best assistant coaches in college football.

His son began his career at the University at Indiana, a school for which Coach McCullough spent some time at from 2011-2016 and again during the 2021 season. During his freshman campaign, Dasan made a tremendous impact for the Hoosiers. In 12 games, he recorded 49 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, four sacks, and three pass breakups. That season was good enough to earn him Freshman All-American honors.
McCullough opted to enter the portal following that lone season in Bloomington, and was in high demand. He ended up with the Sooners where he spent two seasons. During that stretch, he would record 47 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, and three pass breakups. McCullough was often injured during his 2024 campaign, playing in just seven games.
Now entering the portal for a second time, it’s uncertain what the market is going to be like for McCullough. Notre Dame is obviously going to be a school that a lot of people mention for a lot of reasons, most notably his father being on staff. Whether the Irish staff reciprocates any interest remains to be seen.
Another interesting potential destination is Louisville, where his brother Daeh McCullough currently plays safety. Dasan is a very physically gifted player but durability has stunted his growth, as has positional fit. Figuring both of those out should be a top priority.
At 6-5 and 230 pounds, McCullough is an extremely unique athlete. His physical profile is a little bit of a funky fit positionally. In theory, he looks like a player who could grow into a true EDGE defender long-term, but he just spent two seasons as an overhang. You have to wonder if that missed development will be a hindrance for the rest of his college career.
