Analyst points out interesting development for Ashton Jeanty

By now, the NFL world is likely tired of hearing Raiders fans and analysts hype up Ashton Jeanty, but it it difficult not to get excited about the sixth overall pick’s future.

Much of the talk surrounding Jeanty’s first offseason has been the adjustment of his traditional stance, leading to him bending down instead of standing up straight in the backfield like he did at Boise State. However, that has done little to dampen the enthusiasm surrounding the star running back, who is expected to be the starter on Week 1 against the New England Patriots. Hoping to rejuvenate what was the NFL’s worst rushing game last season, Jeanty is hoping to meet or even surpass the high expectations placed on him.

While Jeanty’s rushing is the focal point for him, he is also seeing some time working in other situations.

Jeanty is trying to prove himself as a three-down back for the Raiders.

During OTAs, The Athletic’s Ted Nguyen shared a video sent by the Raiders that featured Jeanty running passing routes, indicating that he could get some opportunities as a receiver out of the backfield.

The development is somewhat of a surprise, as Jeanty was never really featured in the passing game at Boise State.

Only catching 23 receptions for 138 yards last season, Jeanty was used more as a safety valve or underneath passing option. However, Jeanty being a factor for the Raiders in the passing game would go a long way towards establishing himself as a genuine three-down back. Running routes in OTAs likely means Jeanty is learning how to handle third-down situations and negative game scripts, allowing him to continue seeing the field in pass protection and as a receiving option behind Brock Bowers and Jakobi Meyers.

The best strategy often revolves around getting the ball in the hands of a team’s top playmakers, and it appears as though the Raiders intend to do that with Jeanty.
