The Oklahoma Sooners have added quite a haul to their team out of the transfer portal, adding 21 total new faces across the winter and spring portal windows.
The Sooners significantly reformed their offense, adding multiple playmakers at wide receiver and tight end while shoring up the depth of their offensive line. Their most important additions were bringing quarterback John Mateer and running back Jaydn Ott to Norman, both of whom are capable of being the focal point of Oklahoma's offense this season.
Oklahoma's haul out of the portal was so well-received among analysts that On3 named the Sooners one of the biggest winners out of the transfer portal in the spring.
"Oklahoma was a clear winner in the winter window when it landed Washington State quarterback John Mateer. The Sooners had to land a proven quarterback, and they went out and did that with Mateer. Since then, rave reviews have come in from Norman on the quarterback and his new offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle. Placing talent around Mateer was important for the Sooners this spring. Cal running back Jaydn Ott decided on Oklahoma within 24 hours of entering the portal in a decisive win for the Sooners. The most experienced back to enter the portal this spring, Ott has rushed for 2,597 career yards and 29 touchdowns and can alter what Oklahoma does on the offensive side of the ball. The addition of Jer’Michael Carter provides wide receiver depth, while Tate Sandell was a needed pickup in the special-teams game."
The Sooners also added transfer quarterback Whitt Newbauer from Mercer, who earned SoCon Offensive All-Freshman honors for leading Mercer to a Southern Conference championship and whose only losses came against Alabama and North Dakota State.
Just a year after a rather disappointing haul in the transfer portal, the Sooners have completely flipped the script on their approach to the portal under Brent Venables and new general manager Jim Nagy. If the Sooners get back to their winning ways, I'd expect them to keep stacking more and more wins here moving forward.
