Andy Staples Believes Sawyer Robertson Could Be This Year’s Surprise Heisman Name

On3’s Andy Staples recently shared his list of under-the-radar Heisman contenders, setting strict criteria: no quarterback with odds shorter than +3,000.

Leading the surprising pack is Baylor’s own Sawyer Robertson, posted at +6,600—an outside bet worth noting.

Staples highlights Robertson’s late-season burst in 2024 as the spark behind his candidacy. “He wasn’t initially slotted as Baylor’s starter last year, took over early and grew into the job,” Staples explained. “He led the Bears to a 6–1 record in their last seven games and averaged 8.9 yards per attempt in that span.” That kind of momentum isn’t just impressive—it’s Heisman-worthy.

Robertson’s rise began modestly before morphing into a reliable offensive engine. After settling into the role, he ripped off 8.9 yards per attempt over that stretch, piling up production and belief in his arm. That sustained output pushed Baylor into the playoff conversation and established Robertson as one of the Big 12’s next gunslingers.

There’s no shortage of high-ceiling QBs in the conference in 2025. Still, Robertson’s combination of efficiency, late-season production, and outsider intrigue gives him a unique edge. Betting markets are discounting him, but Staples argues that might just be Baylor’s secret weapon. Hollywood scripts don’t write themselves, but underdog stories do.

For Baylor and Robertson, the assignment is clear: back up Staples’ assertion. A fast start to 2025, especially if Baylor skyrockets into the national picture, could turn this sleeper into a headline Heisman contender. With the awards narrative in its early stages, Robertson is quietly launching his case.

If he keeps this up, don’t just expect pre-season noise. Expect Robertson in December’s shortlist, and with odds like +6,600, he’s a Heisman story unfolding in real time.
