Anon ACC coaches spill on Belichick's high expectations at UNC
Bill Belichick should be ready for a culture shock as he swaps the NFL for college football, his peers in the ACC warn. Bob Donnan-Imagn Images

All eyes are on Bill Belichick after North Carolina hired the man considered the most accomplished coach in NFL history to lead the Tar Heels football program.

It’s a first for Belichick, who has eight Super Bowl championships as a head coach and coordinator, as he’s never held a position with a college team.

His counterparts in the ACC, like everyone else, are interested to see how this develops.

“How Bill adjusts to the structure of the college game is gonna be crucial,” one unnamed ACC football coach told Athlon Sports.

He added: “It’s less time you get with the players, which means it’s less football intelligence.”

College football coaches do get less time to discuss strategy with their players than in the NFL thanks to NCAA rules, limiting that exposure to just 20 hours per week during the season and 8 hours per week during the offseason.

Compare that with the upwards of 14 hours per day NFL players can get in training, so Belichick will have far less opportunity to instruct his players to his liking.

Another key aspect that could predict Belichick’s success or failure is how well or poorly North Carolina embraces the NIL revolution.

Belichick suggested he would push the school to drastically increase its spending on football recruitment and raise UNC’s profile to something like a semi-pro organization.

“They’ve been vocal about criticizing other programs on how they spend and evaluate. There’s talk about how they’re going to become an advanced, pro-level scouting program that implements NIL better. We’ll see,” another coach said.

He added: “We do expect a better overall haul from these guys in high school recruiting than from Mack [Brown], at least until the novelty wears off or Bill gets a bad reputation.”

Some PR experts might say Belichick is already in a reputation deficit, but not because of anything he’s done or not done relating to the X’s and O’s.

The big story around Belichick this offseason has been his relationship with Jordon Hudson, the woman he describes in his new book as his “idea mill” and “creative muse”, and whose presence around the coach has been a hot topic.

There has been growing scrutiny around Hudson’s influence over Belichick in her role as his perceived publicist and handler, and the negative perceptions it has occasionally brought the North Carolina football program.

That interest was fueled in part by the age gap between the two ─ Belichick is 73 and Hudson is 24 ─ but surged after Hudson’s profile increased in the months following Belichick being hired as UNC’s football coach.

And while she or North Carolina clearly haven’t enjoyed all that exposure, it’s likely going to continue at least until the start of football season, when most of the attention will move to what kind of team Belichick is able to put on the field.

Belichick denied that Hudson plays any role involving his management of the football program.

“Honestly,” another ACC coach said, “no one really has any idea what to expect on the field when they start this season.”

Notre Dame believed to be trending toward surprise choice at quarterback

The quarterback battle for Notre Dame is set to come to an end shortly, and it might be a surprise considering how the national media predicted the race to finish. Per Eric Hansen of On3, head coach Marcus Freeman is set to name the starting quarterback by Sunday when he meets the media. The Irish are still letting the quarterback battle play out until then, but it appears sophomore quarterback Kenny Minchey is the favorite to start at Hard Rock Stadium against the Miami Hurricanes on Aug. 31. Minchey has shown improvement in numerous areas throughout camp, and he has the edge on freshman quarterback CJ Carr in what is believed to be the final week of the competition. "As of Wednesday, the line between 1 and 2 remained blurred," Hansen wrote. "The tiebreaker may eventually go to Minchey, per the source, because of his ability to be a true running threat and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock’s preference to have that element to put pressure on opposing defenses. "But he also has a preference for QBs who can transcend adversity, and the training camp phase was choreographed to test precisely that. While both contenders responded persistently in a manner that defies their inexperience, Minchey has been exceptional in that regard." Throughout the summer, ESPN writers such as Bill Connelly and Mark Schlabach have written as though it were a forgone conclusion that Carr would win the battle in training camp. However, Minchey appears to be a natural fit for how offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock likes to scheme against a defense. He helped dual-threat Jayden Daniels earn a Heisman Trophy in 2023 and took Notre Dame to a national championship appearance with Riley Leonard. The battle isn't over, but the edge appears to be running Minchey's way.

Yankees Announce Paul Goldschmidt News After Loss to Twins

The New York Yankees won their first series of August in a three-game set against the Minnesota Twins from Monday to Wednesday, but they're still in trouble. They're only one game ahead of the Cleveland Guardians for the third and final AL Wild Card spot with six weeks left in the regular season. The Yankees beat the Twins 6-2 on Monday and 9-1 on Tuesday before losing 4-1 on Wednesday, but Tuesday's victory came at a price. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt left early and didn't play on Wednesday, a night in which New York especially needed his bat. The Yankees released an update on Goldschmidt after Wednesday night's game, via MLB.com's Bryan Hoch. The 37-year-old has a low-grade knee sprain with inflammation. He's slashing .276/.331/.422 with 10 homers and 40 RBI over 112 games. Fellow first baseman Ben Rice went 1-for-4 in Goldshmidt's stead on Wednesday. The 26-year-old is slashing .233/.326/.456 with 17 homers and 38 RBI over 101 contests. Paul Goldschmidt comments on injury Goldschmidt said that he hopes he can avoid the IL with a "short-term" absence, via Hoch. While Rice is a high-upside player in his second year, the seven-time All-Star is still a more dependable contact hitter at this point. Goldschmidt is third on the squad with 110 hits, although his younger counterpart's OPS is 30 points higher. The Yankees need the veteran back as soon as possible to help them maintain their Wild Card spot. His presence allows Rice to play catcher, which is optimal given Austin Wells's struggles. The 26-year-old is slashing just .206/.264/.408 with 15 homers and 56 RBI over 94 games. Up next for New York is a road series against the St. Louis Cardinals, Goldschmidt's former team.

Steelers Make Strange Change to Depth Chart

Steelers Make Strange Change to Depth Chart

The Pittsburgh Steelers have released their second depth chart of the preseason, and it includes quite an interesting development as it pertains to the offensive line. 2024 first-round pick Troy Fautanu, as expected, remains the starter at right tackle, but three-time Pro Bowler Andrus Peat has slotted in as the second-string option at the position. Peat signed a one-year deal with the Steelers last week as the team looked to bolster their depth up front. The fact that he's rather far up the depth chart isn't the surprising part, though: it's his position. Throughout his 10-year career, Pro Football Focus has charted Peat as lining up at right tackle for just 78 snaps, with all of them coming during his rookie season with the New Orleans Saints in 2015. The 31-year-old has primarily played left guard, logging 4,469 total reps there according to PFF, and he was among the league's top interior linemen during his prime. Peat's racked up 1,959 reps at left tackle, meaning he's not a stranger to the tackle position, but switching sides takes some time to get used to. After joining the Steelers last week, he told reporters that he's ready to work on adapting to right tackle and will play there if the team needs him to. “It’s definitely something you gotta work on, especially if you’ve played there your whole career,” Peat said. “But I feel like if I needed to, I could play on the right.” Peat got plenty of playing time during Pittsburgh's preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars last Saturday, recording 21 snaps at left tackle and allowing a pressure. With some lingering concerns regarding Broderick Jones' performance and the health of Fautanu after dislocating his kneecap early in his rookie year, adding Peat to the mix was a sensible move for the Steelers. It's certainly interesting that he's listed as the top backup at right tackle considering he has almost zero prior professional experience there, but as a veteran with an impressive track record in the NFL, it appears Pittsburgh is confident that Peat can learn quickly and become a quality reserve option at the position.

Chiefs get positive update on Rashee Rice's potential suspension

The Kansas City Chiefs may have their primary pass-catcher on the field to start the 2025 season. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the date for Rashee Rice's disciplinary hearing with the NFL has been set to Sept. 30. That makes him available for the first four weeks of the campaign. Nevertheless, as NFL insider Mike Florio notes, the Chiefs might be in a bit of a hurry to resolve this, as they don't want it to drag further into the season. "An agreement as to a punishment under the Personal Conduct Policy can be reached at any time," wrote Florio. "If it doesn’t happen, the hearing will transpire. Depending on the time necessary for a final decision and any appeal, Rice could be available for roughly half of the season, before a suspension would commence." This essentially means that if both parties can't reach a resolution soon, Rice could be suspended late into the season or even in the playoffs. However, he likely won't face a lengthy suspension, and could be looking at a 4-6 game ban, based on prior similar incidents. Rice pleaded guilty to multiple felonies after his involvement in a multi-car crash in Texas in 2024. He then suffered a season-ending leg injury just four games into his second year in the league. Rice is projected to be quarterback Patrick Mahomes' primary weapon in the passing game after his breakout rookie season. Second-year pro Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown will round out the receiving room.
