Miami made waves in the college football world after snagging Carson Beck from Georgia.

The one-time Heisman Trophy frontrunner lost a step from his prolific debut in '23, but he still threw for 3,485 yards and 28 touchdowns Also, Beck is expected to be at 100% following surgery to repair an elbow injury.

But there are still rumblings about whether the Hurricanes made a good investment by offering Beck a $4.3 million NIL deal for his final season. One anonymous ACC coach believes the jury is still out on Miami's offseason spending spree.

"Is Beck worth all that money? No one really knows right now, but that's the question you have to ask," the coach told Athlon Sports' staff in the 2025 College Football Preview. "They'll be decent up front on defense, and they spent like crazy for a new secondary."

The coach compared the Canes "go for broke" mentality next to two famed MLB franchises who are notorious for big-time deals. And honestly, it kind of makes sense.

"Think there's a bigger question here on how and why they spend what they do on the guys they pick," the coach added. "It's sort of like a Dodgers or Yankees mindset, spending on top-end recruits and portal guys, and not really a team-focused culture. You're still in Florida, you still have to prioritize the high schools, and they've done that in NIL."

Miami wants to compete as one of the top teams in the ACC. Also, Mario Cristobal and his staff know if takes SEC level talent to make a playoff run, thus why Beck was the QB high on their list.

Miami opens the season with a contender right out of the gate. They'll face Notre Dame at home on Sunday, Aug 31 at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
