After being a media darling and fan favorite throughout the 2024 season as the backup to Quinn Ewers, Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning has learned how quickly fans can turn on him.
The No. 7 Longhorns hosted the UTEP Miners on Saturday, winning by a score of 27-10. While the Longhorns won by three scores, the final score doesn't do justice to how poorly Manning played.
In the first half alone, Manning threw 10 straight incomplete passes, threw a boneheaded interception in the end zone and ended up getting booed by Texas fans. He finished the game 11-of-25 (44%) for 114 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while also rushing for two scores.
When speaking to the media after the game, Manning admitted that he is better than what he is showing on the field and is frustrated he's not showing it.
"A little bit," Manning said via Danny Davis. "I'm just frustrated. I know I’m better than this. It's a little frustrating. It's going to be hard to sleep tonight, but I'll be back rolling.”
Rumors have been circulating that Manning is secretly injured, but in reality, it appears that he and his receivers aren't on the same page, the play-calling is suspect and he has developed some sloppy habits along the way.
Texas hosts Sam Houston State next week, which gives Manning and the offense one more game to iron out the kinks. After that, the Longhorns will have a bye and then dive right into the thick of SEC play.
