After two years on the sidelines, Arch Manning is preparing to make his debut as the Texas Longhorns' starting quarterback in 2025.

As the No. 1 overall recruit, Manning had his choice of schools, including Alabama, Ole Miss, Georgia, and Clemson. While Manning committed to Texas in 2022, rumors swirled he'd enter the transfer portal after spending the first year on the bench.

These rumors popped up again after quarterback Quinn Ewers remained the starter last season.

However, according Manning's father Cooper, this was always the plan. And when it came to choosing Texas, head coach Steve Sarkisian played a crucial role. Manning agrees.

"Obviously, he came off a really good year in 2020 with Mac Jones and Alabama," Manning said of coach Sarkisian while chatting at Raising Cane's in Thibodaux, Louisiana, where they're hosting the annual Manning Passing Academy. "They lit it up.

"I just like him as a person. I liked Austin, I liked Texas, it was just a right fit. He’s hard on me sometimes, but I deserve it a lot of the time. But it’s going to be a fun year. I’m excited."

Cooper added: "When Coach Sark was recruiting Archie, we talked about the big picture. Developing him. Doing it right. Taking your time. Just because you get in and play immediately doesn’t mean that’s the right time."

"So, sitting there, learning. It’s frustrating at sometimes," Cooper continued.

"People want to play, they’re used to playing. But that’s not necessarily the best thing... Watch, you learn, you grow, get bigger, stronger, faster, and more confident — so when it’s your time go, you’re ready."

Manning will make his first start of the 2025 season against the Ohio State Buckeyes on August 30. "We got a young group, full of energy," Manning said. "We have a fun schedule ahead, so I’m excited.
