The wait is finally over in Tucson. After a grueling offseason that felt longer than a two-minute drill, the Arizona Wildcats returned to action Saturday night. They delivered exactly what their fans needed. A statement victory that erased the bitter taste of last year’s disappointing 4-8 campaign.
Head coach Brent Brennan watched his rebuilt squad dominate the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 40-6 at Arizona Stadium. For the first time in months, there was genuine optimism buzzing through the desert air. This wasn’t just a win – it was a demolition that showcased everything this program hopes to become under Brennan’s second year at the helm.
The Wildcats wasted no time setting the tone. After forcing Hawaii into a quick three-and-out, new offensive coordinator Seth Doege’s unit marched down the field with surgical precision. Running back Kedrick Reescano punched in a 13-yard touchdown run just 1:21 into the game, and from that moment, this one was never in doubt.
The most encouraging sign for Wildcats fans? The running game looked transformed entirely. After struggling to establish any consistent ground attack last season, Arizona pounded Hawaii for 237 rushing yards behind a three-headed monster that should give opposing defenses nightmares all season long.
Portland State transfer Quincy Craig stole the show with a career-high 125 yards on just seven carries, including a jaw-dropping 54-yard touchdown scamper that had the crowd on its feet. But Craig wasn’t alone in the backfield party – Reescano and Ismail Mahdi each found pay dirt as well, giving Doege exactly the balanced attack he envisioned when he took the job.
While the offense grabbed headlines, Danny Gonzales’ defensive unit put on an absolute clinic. The Wildcats forced five turnovers, which is their most since the 2023 Alamo Bowl, and consistently disrupted Hawaii’s rhythm with relentless pressure.
Quarterback Noah Fifita was 13-of-23 passing for 161 yards. His 10-yard rushing touchdown demonstrated the dual-threat capability this offense desperately needs. The offensive line deserves major credit, too, allowing just two sacks after surrendering 28 a season ago. If that protection holds up, Fifita could be in for a breakout year.
This victory marked Arizona’s fourth consecutive season-opening win and made Brennan just the second Wildcats coach since Rich Rodriguez to win his first two season openers. More importantly, it showed a program that learned from last year’s struggles and committed to fixing them. The Wildcats will host Weber State next Saturday, looking to build on this momentum before Big 12 play begins. If this performance is any indication, Arizona football may be poised to surprise some people in 2025.
