Arizona State RB Alton McCaskill to Transfer
Katie Stratman-USA TODAY Sports

Arizona State running back Alton McCaskill is planning to enter the transfer portal once again. The well-traveled McCaskill has three seasons of college football under his belt, having played at Houston, Colorado and with the Sun Devils.

McCaskill was a true freshman with the Houston Cougars in 2021. Setting a school freshman scoring record, McCaskill scored 16 touchdowns and rushed for 961 yards for a team that finished 12-2 and played for the American Athletic Conference (AAC) championship. To cap off the season, McCaskill earned AAC Rookie of the Year honors

McCaskill suffered an ACL tear that forced him to miss the entire 2022 season. Then he transferred to play for Coach Prime Deion Sanders at Colorado for the 2023 season. He only played in four games in Boulder.

In 2024, McCaskill hit the portal again and sought a warmer climate and landed in Tempe with coach Kenny Dillingham and the Sun Devils, where he gained 17 yards on seven carries.

It is a small body of work, but if McCaskill can catch on with the right team and resurrect his college football career, he would be an asset with his size and power running.

Below is a short list of teams that could benefit from a player like McCaskill and where he can earn some significant playing time.

Southern Miss

The Golden Eagles have a new leader, former Marshall head coach Charles Huff. The roster has been completely overhauled. Southern Miss ranked No. 119 in rushing offense last season and averaged 108 yards per game. McCaskill could thrive under a coach like Huff.

Florida State

The Seminoles ranked 129th in the FBS in rushing, as they averaged a paltry 89 yards per game on the ground. Gus Malzahn is the new offensive coordinator in Tallahassee and employs a run-focused spread offense. With his size and power, McCaskill could breathe new life into Florida State’s anemic rushing attack.

TCU

Ranked No. 113th in the FBS in rushing offense, the Horned Frogs averaged 113 yards on the ground and less than four yards per carry. The Horned Frogs would allow McCaskill to play in his home state.

The spring transfer portal window is open until April 25th.
