The Arizona State Sun Devils are one of the hottest brands in college football, and their offense has a lot to do with it.
Last year, the Sun Devils were No. 30 in the country in scoring, averaging 32.9 points per game. Arizona State was No. 28 in total offense, averaging 429.4 yards per game. On the ground, the Sun Devils averaged 199.9 yards per game, good for No. 20 in FBS. Through the air, Arizona State averaged 229.5 yards per game, No. 62 in FBS.
The Sun Devils are missing one big piece from last season, running back Cam Skattebo, who is now in the NFL. But most of the offense is back from a year ago.
Here are three offensive players to keep an eye on for the Arizona State Sun Devils.
The Sun Devils have several backs to choose from to try and replicate Skateboo’s production from a season ago. Brown will probably get first crack at the job.
He’s been with Arizona State each of the past two seasons, but naturally, he was overshadowed by Skattebo. Last year, he gained 351 yards and scored twice. He also caught 13 passes for 189 yards and a score.
He won’t be the only back that offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo will turn to. Army transfer Kanye Udoh, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards, has the tools to push Brown for playing time.
No quarterback is getting more attention in the Big 12 than Leavitt, who burst onto the scene yet played second-fiddle to Skattebo at the same time.
He was named the Big 12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year after he set the ASU record for total offense by a freshman with 3,328 yards and finished second in program history in passing yards by a freshman at 2,885. His 3,328 total yards of offense with eighth in ASU season history.
He was the 12th highest-rated quarterback in FBS a year ago. He has all the weapons he needs to build on last season and make himself into a top Heisman Trophy candidate — if the East Coast is willing to pay attention.
WR Jordyn Tyson
His injury at the end of last season robbed the Sun Devils of their best wide receiver for the Big 12 Championship Game and College Football Playoff. Fortunately, he decided to return to ASU for his junior year.
As a refresher, Tyson was the Big 12 offensive newcomer of the year after he caught 75 passes for 1,101 yards and 10 touchdowns. Leavitt should be thrilled that Tyson is back.
