The Arkansas Razorbacks have secured a valuable piece for their defensive backfield with the addition of Maine transfer Shakur Smalls. The former Black Bears standout committed to Arkansas on Saturday, shortly after concluding his official visit to Fayetteville.

Smalls, a 6-foot, 205-pound defensive back from Pennsylvania, brings extensive experience and on-field production to the Razorbacks. Over four seasons at Maine, he appeared in 36 games, recording 165 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 20 pass breakups, and four interceptions.

Consistent Contributor with Versatile Skillset

In 2024, Smalls played in 11 games and finished fifth on the team with 43 tackles, along with six pass breakups and an interception. His performance earned him solid marks from Pro Football Focus, including a 74.1 overall defensive grade, a 74.3 run-defense grade, and a 73.5 coverage grade across 400 snaps.

Arkansas intends to utilize Smalls at either safety or the hybrid “Hog” position, depending on how he fits into the defensive scheme. His ability to cover ground in the secondary, provide run support, and defend in space gives the Razorbacks a multi-dimensional option with only one year of eligibility remaining.

Sought-After Transfer Chooses Razorbacks

Smalls drew interest from several Power Five programs, including schools in the SEC, ACC, and Big Ten. Scheduled visits to Pitt and other programs were ultimately canceled following his experience in Fayetteville.

“It was a no-brainer just getting on campus,” Smalls said. “I was looking for a program with strong culture, and I felt that here right away.”

He credited Arkansas defensive coordinator Travis Williams and defensive backs coach Marcus Woodson for fostering a welcoming and focused environment, emphasizing shared values and a team-first mindset.

Strategic Addition to Strengthen Defensive Depth

Smalls joins a pair of recent defensive transfer additions, linebacker Trent Whalen from Kent State and defensive back Julian Neal from Stanford, as part of Arkansas’ spring portal activity. Together, the three transfers bring a combination of size, experience, and leadership to a defense looking to raise its level of play in the upcoming season.

With Smalls set to arrive on campus in late May, the Razorbacks add a seasoned presence to a position group that continues to evolve. For a team facing the weekly demands of SEC competition, his experience and steady production could prove timely and impactful.

“I feel like I can bring something here, and they can bring something out of me,” Smalls said. “It’s about trust, and that’s already been established.”
