The defense had a meltdown against Ole Miss and couldn’t come up with one key stop against a mediocre Oklahoma State team in two overtimes, but for the most part, it was better than the stats.
It allowed fewer than 28 points nine times, was good against the run, and there’s just enough back from last year’s two-deep - and with a slew of options coming in through the portal to help the depth - to be just a bit better.

Arkansas Offense Breakdown
Season Prediction, Win Total, Keys to Season
- Linebacker might be the team’s biggest strength. Xavian Sorey Jr. led the team with 99 tackles with 2.5 sacks, and nine tackles for loss. Stephen Dix is back after making 72 stops, Tavion Wallace is a superstar recruit who’ll soon be amazing, and Bradley Shaw will be a tackling machine when he gets a shot somewhere inside.
- Replacing top pass rusher Landon Jackson is a huge issue - he’s now with the Buffalo Bills. It’s not a deep bunch up front, especially at end. Quincy Rhodes is a 276-pound option, and Charlie Collins is more like a true edge rusher, but there aren’t any sure-thing playmakers to get behind the line.
The tackles are a tad stronger. 389-pound Ian Gerrard and 326-pound Cameron Ball will take care of the nose, and the hope is for David Oke (Abilene Christian) after coming up with a huge year at the lower level.
- The defensive back situation has a few pieces that need to come together, but that’s only because there’s depth from the transfer portal.
Miguel Mitchell missed most of last year, but the former Florida transfer should be locked into a safety spot along with Larry Worth III. Caleb Wooden (Auburn), Kani Walker (Oklahoma), and Quentavius Scandrett (Eastern Michigan) are all in the mix for jobs.
Out of the three transfers, Wooden has the most upside, and Scandrett is the most experienced with 158 stops over the last three years.
It’s the same thing with the corners, with the portal talking over. Jaheim Singletary is the most experienced returning corner, but Selman Bridges has the talent to be fantastic.
The transfers might all be better. Julian Neal (Fresno State) was one of the top corners in the portal, Kani Walker (Oklahoma) can play anywhere in the secondary, and Jordan Young (Cincinnati) made 69 tackles with 12 broken up passes over the last two years.
