Some programs have a special talent for shooting themselves in the foot. Arguably, Auburn may already be in this category, but if they aren’t, hiring Jimbo Fisher as their next head coach would solidify their position.

After firing Hugh Freeze on Sunday, this should be a blank slate for the program. Plus, with it only being early November, there is no immense rush to make a chaotic or disorganized decision.

Because of this, the fact that Fisher’s name was immediately mentioned and supposedly is supported by some boosters, is troubling. Auburn took their blank slate and tarnished it before any Tigers fan could even celebrate Freeze’s firing.

Considering that Fisher has a 128-48 record as a head coach, which is an impressive .727 winning percentage, why should Auburn steer away from him? Here are a few reasons:

Stubbornness and Lack of Adaptability: A major criticism was his unwillingness to adapt his offense, which made his system often feel outdated. He was also resistant to bringing in outside input, waiting six years into his Texas A&M tenure to hire an offensive coordinator.

Quarterback Development Issues: Despite having a reputation as a “QB whisperer” early in his career, aside from Jameis Winston, he struggled to consistently develop quarterbacks at both FSU and Texas A&M. This may cause PTSD for Auburn fans due to their Freeze experience.

Play-Calling and Game Management: He was often criticized for conservative in-game decision-making and a mentality of “playing not to lose” during big games.

Lack of Discipline and Accountability: At Texas A&M, there were significant issues with a lack of player discipline and accountability, with reports of players missing meetings or being late without punishment.

Hopefully for the sake of Auburn fans, lets all hope this is just a crazy internet rumor. But if there are boosters pushing this agenda, the decision makers at the school need to quickly snuff this out.

The inmates can’t successfully run the asylum, no matter how much they donate, which is what college football has become.
