Auburn QB ready to compete with Michigan State transfer for starting job

On Friday, Auburn added former Michigan State quarterback Payton Thorne via the transfer portal. However, the Tigers' incumbent signal-caller Robby Ashford doesn't seem worried.

Shortly after news of Thorne's addition broke, Ashford took to Twitter, announcing that he wasn't shying away from the competition.

Instead of pouting, Ashford is taking the challenge head-on, which is admirable. However, that attitude might also be necessary as Thorne, on paper, is an upgrade at quarterback for Auburn.

A former three-star recruit and two-year starter at Michigan State, Thorne is a worthy challenger for Ashford.

In his first year as a starter for the Spartans in 2021, Thorne threw for 27 touchdowns, setting the single-season program record previously held by Minnesota Vikings Pro Bowler Kirk Cousins. Last season was more up and down for Thorne, but he still completed 62 percent of his passes, throwing for 19 touchdowns and 11 interceptions over 12 games.

Meanwhile, Ashford struggled a bit in 2022. After failing to see action during his first two seasons with the Tigers, he made his debut last year, finishing with a 49.2 completion percentage while throwing seven touchdowns and seven interceptions in 12 starts.

Ashford may be approaching his battle with Thorne the right way, but he'll likely need more than words and the right mindset to be Hugh Freeze's quarterback in 2023.
