The Auburn Tigers are not a football program that will struggle adapting to this new era of college football, especially when it comes to the NIL side of things. Auburn isn't the biggest town, but the school boasts one of the richest football histories in the country, and with that history comes rich donors and other avenues of funding to support players.
On Tuesday, college football insider Pete Nakos revealed that star wide receivers Cam Coleman and Eric Singleton are making around $1 million each in NIL.
"Eric Singleton was the other top wide receiver to hit the transfer portal this offseason, leaving Georgia Tech to prove himself in the SEC. Auburn was immediately the school to watch in his portal recruitment. Sources have told On3 that he will make over $1 million this season for the Tigers. A former five-star recruit, Cam Coleman is now in his second season with the Tigers. Auburn has put together one of the top wide receiver rooms in the country with Coleman and Singleton. Putting that together comes at a premium. Similar to Singleton, sources have told On3 that Coleman is also making north of $1 million, sources have said." - Pete Nakos, On3
If there is anyone worth that type of money, it's certainly those two. However, this could end up being pretty embarrassing depending on how the season goes.
Now, this team looks good so far. They look to be a team that can really shake things up in the SEC, and maybe make things harder than people initially thought. But, there is still the possibility that this team is bad. They haven't really played any big-time competition yet. Baylor doesn't look to be an amazing team, and Ball State definitely isn't a team that can compete with any of the mediocre Power Four teams.
So, there is a world where this team spent that amount of money on two players, just to still be mediocre, and win six or seven games. Through the first two games of the year, against teams that won't necessarily give the Tigers fits defensively in the pass game, they were still unable to move the ball deep down the field. In the first game, Arnold finished with well under 200 passing yards, and the receiving yards leader in that game had 22 yards, and that isn't even either of the big two receivers being paid $1 million each.
Against Ball State, Cam Coleman had 77 receiving yards while Singleton had two touchdowns, but neither had over 100 receiving yards. And, that's against Ball State, so imagine how the passing game will go against an SEC team like the Oklahoma Sooners, the Georgia Bulldogs, and even the Alabama Crimson Tide?
So, in a way, it feels like this could end up being embarrassing for them.
