The Auburn Tigers are making a big quarterback change after an underwhelming start to the 2024 season.
Redshirt freshman Hank Brown is expected to start at quarterback for Auburn’s upcoming game against New Mexico, according to Justin Hokanson of Auburn Live. The move means team captain Payton Thorne will move to the bench, at least temporarily.
The timing of the decision certainly suggests that Auburn coach Hugh Freeze wants this change to be a lasting one. New Mexico represents a fairly lightweight opponent for Brown to get comfortable against before SEC play begins the following week. Brown, a redshirt freshman, had originally committed to Freeze at Liberty before following the coach to Auburn.
The impetus for the change appears to have come from Auburn’s disappointing loss to Cal. Thorne went 14-of-27 for 165 yards with four interceptions, a stat line that seems to have cost him his starting job.

The Ohio State Buckeyes will continue one of the most grueling scheduling gauntlets in college football history on Aug. 30 as Arch Manning, Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns are set to visit the Horseshoe for an opening week clash. The Buckeyes' challenging opener means the team's new players and lineup combinations must gel quickly, in time for what could be a series of close games this season. On Friday, a potential future star running back on the Buckeyes' roster shared his thoughts on Ohio State's offensive line with two players mentioned as training camp standouts. "(Ohio State running back) James Peoples said there are a lot of Ohio State offensive linemen who have stood out during preseason camp, namely Austin Siereveld and Minnesota transfer Philip Daniels," reporter Chase Brown of ElevenWarriors.com wrote. Siereveld played in 16 games with the Bucks last season and started six games for coach Ryan Day's team. He has the flexibility to play both the left and right guard spots and played right tackle in the 2025 Spring Game, showcasing his versatility. Daniels is a native of the Cincinnati area who stands 6-feet, 5 inches tall and could be the best newcomer on the Buckeyes' offensive line this season. He played in 12 games for the Minnesota Golden Gophers last year and spent two years with PJ Fleck's program before getting the call to transfer to Ohio State. He is expected to battle Ethan Onianwa and others for playing time and has three years of eligibility remaining. The Peoples comments came as Ohio State was ranked surprisingly low in Greg McElroy's preseason rankings. Meanwhile, Michigan fans began calling out the Buckeyes for allegedly stealing a program slogan. The Buckeyes have a chance to continue their winning ways on August 30 in what should be a memorable slate of college football action. With so much to play for this season from August to November and beyond, these two linemen will be worth keeping an eye on as the Ohio State's season progresses toward what fans hope will bring more championship trophies to the Buckeye State.

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James is in peak off-season mode, enjoying his time off while staying ready for his upcoming 23rd season in the NBA, eighth with Los Angeles. James averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists for the Lakers last season. On a separate note, his youngest son, Bryce James, is preparing for his first collegiate season with the Arizona Wildcats, where he committed early in 2025. Before this new chapter, he spent most of his high school basketball career playing for Sierra Canyon, where he won a State Division 1 title in his senior year. Meanwhile, upon Bryce's first trip back home since leaving for college, James was taken aback by his appearance. In the Lakers star's latest Instagram story, he welcomes home his youngest son after his first stint away at Arizona. Within the video, James is overcome with excitement as he points out Bryce's latest physical change to his 159 million followers: his beard. "Y'all see his beard? Oh my goodness!" said James. Born in 2007, Bryce is just 18 years old and stands 6'6 tall ahead of his first season with the Wildcats. Primarily playing the shooting guard position, he's poised for a bright future under legendary coach Tommy Lloyd, who is entering his fifth season with the team. Lloyd's 61 wins in his first two seasons with Arizona are an NCAA Division 1 record. The Wildcats will open their season on November 3 against the defending champion Florida Gators at a neutral site in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Perhaps Superman Paul Skenes has found his kryptonite
Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes may continue to be one of the top contenders for the National League Cy Young Award, but there is one place where he has appeared mortal this season. On Tuesday night, the Milwaukee Brewers did to Skenes what they have done to plenty of MLB pitchers in 2025 ... put up big offensive numbers. For the second time this season, Skenes also pitched in Milwaukee on June 25, the Brewers forced him from the game after just 4.0 innings on Tuesday night, logging six hits and four runs during his time on the mound. Both of those performances came at Milwaukee's home stadium (American Family Field) and both are now Skenes' shortest outings of the season. While another NL Central team has put up more runs against Skenes this season (the St. Louis Cardinals nicked him for five runs in 6.0 innings on April 8), no other team has had the same kind of success over multiple starts by Skenes in 2025 as have the Brewers inside their home stadium. In all this season, Skenes has given up 10 hits and eight runs in 8.0 innings in Milwaukee. It was his third career outing on the road against the Brewers, with his lone 2024 start representing arguably the best outing of his rookie season. On July 11, 2024, Skenes struck out 11 and didn't allow a hit over 7.0 innings as the Pirates would eventually post a 1-0 victory. Tuesday's short outing was highlighted by a pair of Milwaukee home runs, including a leadoff solo shot by Sal Frelick that quickly set the tone for the Brewers. While Milwaukee's hit parade helped raise Skenes' ERA on the season to 2.13, it's hardly any reason for concern in a season where the 23-year-old right-hander is still a heavy favorite (-600) to win the NL Cy Young Award, per BetMGM. Skenes struggling in Milwaukee is likely more yet another stamp of approval on the Brewers' potential to be a threat once the postseason arrives. With an 18-4 record since the All-Star break entering Tuesday, Milwaukee has taken over the NL Central race from the Chicago Cubs. So what's the good news for Skenes? This is Pittsburgh's last trip to Milwaukee this season and the next-to-last series for the Pirates against the red-hot Brewers. Milwaukee will visit PNC Park for a three-game series on Sept. 5-7 and, if Skenes gets a chance for revenge against Milwaukee, there couldn't be a better place for him to take the mound. This season, in 11 starts covering 68.2 innings, Skenes has a 1.70 ERA in the Steel City.
Brewers' Quinn Priester tells the truth after escaping loss in comeback vs. Mets
The Milwaukee Brewers looked as though their hot stretch was going to end on Sunday, when the New York Mets jumped to a 5-0 lead. It was certainly not one of Quinn Priester’s best starts, as the right-handed hurler allowed six earned runs on 10 hits (including two home runs) while recording only two strikeouts and issuing a walk across 4 1/3 innings of work on the mound. It was an especially frustrating individual performance for Priester, considering how great he was in a previous start. Last Monday, Priester went seven innings long and gave up just an earned run on two hits in a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on the road. That was his 10th straight pitching win, and the streak appeared to be on the verge of getting broken in the Mets game. Fortunately for Priester, Milwaukee’s bats came alive just in time to secure another team victory — and keep Priester’s streak going. Priester speaks up on Brewers’ thrilling win against the Mets The Brewers managed to pull off a come-from-behind 7-6 victory, capped by a solo, walk-off home run by rookie sensation Isaac Collins. “It’s indescribable,” Priester said after giving up a season-high 11 hits (h/t Adam McCalvy of MLB.com). “They definitely made up for a lot of my miscues today, but it’s a team game. I love being a part of this team, because otherwise I wouldn’t be able to smile right now.” On the season, Priester is 11-2 with a 3.49 ERA and 1.24 WHIP through 22 appearances (17 starts). The Brewers have now won their last three series via sweeps, and they will look to keep it going with a three-game set coming up against the National League Central division cellar-dwelling Pittsburgh Pirates at home.
