While the Wisconsin Badgers may have lost in Eugene against the Oregon Ducks, a tough a ranked opponent, one goal was finally accomplished.
After losing 37-0 dramatically against the Iowa Hawkeyes in Madison, the Badgers needed to get onto the board. Wisconsin needed to score and needed to find a way to function on offense without having every tool available. However, the scoreless streak only became worse as the Badgers managed to gain just 144 total yards against the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Following the loss to the Buckeyes, Wisconsin only suffered more injuries and was put in seemingly a worse position heading into a clash against an equally dangerous opponent. The Badgers recorded 196 total yards of offense against the Ducks but notably managed to end the scoreless streak before a full 12 quarters set in.
After another scoreless half of football where Wisconsin recorded just 92 yards of total offense, the reality of three straight games without a score began to set in. Between a makeshift offensive line that has fourth options now starting, a third-string quarterback starting, and a fourth-string running back being thrown into play, the hope surrounding the offense has not been present.
Quarterback Hunter Simmons started off with a bang against a late-game Maryland Terrapins defense. Simmons then earned the start against Michigan and played a solid game aside from an under-thrown interception. Since then, the quarterback has recorded ratings of 1, 35.7, and 5 with an overall quarterback rating of 15.5 for the season.
Simmons did not have a good showing against the Ducks’ defense, but managed to snap the scoreless streak with a short two-yard completion to tight end Lance Mason. The former Missouri State tight end has 20 receptions for 267 yards and two touchdowns this season.
Mason was expected to be a strong pickup at a position that has seen limited production the past few years, but the absence of starting quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. has limited just how successful the tight end can be.
For the Wisconsin offense, some of the success of the scoring play goes to play-caller Jeff Grimes, but also to Simmons and Mason who executed the play perfectly. Wisconsin had some success against a defense that allows five yards per completion (3rd in FBS) and just 997 yards through the air (2nd in FBS).
The combination of a quarterback who is not ready to run the offense and an extremely talented pass defense unit spelled out disaster early on. Simmons had some moments, including a pass to Eugene Hilton Jr. that went for 42-yards, but overall struggled towards a quarterback rating of 5.
Wisconsin has countless injuries and the team has been throwing everything at the field and seeing what can stick. Gideon Ituka certainly proved he can effectively run the football for the Badgers while the quarterback position continues to be a mystery. Even with the scoreless streak now behind them, the Wisconsin staff still has plenty of questions to answer on offense.
