Bengals LBs coach Al Golden reportedly agrees to three-year deal to become Notre Dame DC

Just two days ago, linebackers coach Al Golden was with the Cincinnati Bengals in Los Angeles, as they came close to winning their first Super Bowl in franchise history. Now, he appears to be heading back to the college game.

Following a three-year playing career at Penn State, Golden briefly played in the NFL with the New England Patriots in 1992. The 52-year-old's coaching career then began in 1993 with Red Bank Catholic High School as their offensive coordinator.

In 1994, Golden joined the collegiate ranks with Virginia as a graduate assistant, where he stayed until 1996. Golden then served as the linebackers coach at Boston College from 1997 to 1999 and then held the same position for the Nittany Lions in 2000.

Golden re-joined the Cavaliers as their defensive coordinator and held that role from 2001 to 2005, before landing his first head-coaching gig in 2006 with Temple. Golden was at the helm of the Owls for five seasons, recording a 27-34 mark in regular-season games.

The former tight end helped Temple earn a spot in the EagleBank Bowl in 2009 after a 9-4 campaign, a season in which he was named the MAC Coach of the Year. Golden was hired as Miami's head coach in December 2010 and in four-plus years with the Hurricanes, posted a 32-25 record during the regular season. Between Temple and Miami, Golden posted a 59-59 career record in the regular season and 0-3 mark in bowl games.

Golden has been in the NFL for the last six years, first working as the Detroit Lions' tight ends coach from 2016 to 2017, then as their linebackers coach from 2018 to 2019, and then as the Bengals linebackers coach from 2020 to 2022.
