Big 12 social media account takes brutal shot at Brent Venables

Oklahoma Sooners coach Brent Venables is taking some heat from the Big 12 over comments he made about the quality of the league.

Venables on Tuesday discussed how difficult the SEC is to play in and how many of the games come down to a single possession. To illustrate that, he compared it to the old composition of the Big 12 in an unflattering way.

“This isn’t the old Big 12 days where Oklahoma destroys everybody every single week except one game of the year,” Venables said.

The official Big 12 X account took note of Venables’ comments and very quickly roasted him.

“Coach Venables lost eight Conference games in his two seasons in the Big 12,” it wrote.

The Sooners were still in the Big 12 during Venables’ first two seasons as head coach. He actually went 3-6 in conference play during his first season of 2022 before posting a 7-2 mark in 2023.

The decision made by both Oklahoma and Texas to leave the Big 12 for the SEC made them a lot of enemies in their former conference, with even the league commissioner not shy about sharing his feelings on the matter. Venables gave the league an opening to punch him in the face, and the league did not miss.

Venables went 2-6 in his first SEC season with Oklahoma last season. His team is 5-1 this year, but has split the first two games of its SEC schedule after last Saturday’s loss to rival Texas.
