On Tuesday morning, media members were allowed to watch the first 20 minutes of LSU Football's practice session. During that time, former Texas Longhorn DT Sydir Mitchell went down with what was presumed to be a knee injury. He could hardly put any weight on his leg as he was helped off the field by a couple of trainers.
Today, we got a very positive injury update.
The former Longhorn was back at practice and in full pads on Thursday morning. He was participating in drills during the time the media was allowed in, but we didn't see him or any of the other defensive linemen doing the drill which injured him.
This is absolutely fantastic news for LSU and Mitchell. The transfer didn't play much at Texas, but has been very impressive in his first few weeks as a Tiger. He weighs in at 6-foot-6, 355-pounds and plays exactly like it. In run defense drills, he's been unmovable, even when they put him in a 2-on-1 situation.
LSU was already waiting to get their leader, Jacobian Guillory, back from injury. He tore his achilles last year and has finally put the pads back on, but he's not participating in full capacity as he recovers. Losing Mitchell for an extended period of time would've been a big blow.
When he transferred to LSU, nobody expected Mitchell to start, but he's certainly worked himself into the conversation. He's the biggest body on LSU's defensive line, and if he can get back to 100% and perform the way he has this spring, he'll give Kyle Williams and Brian Kelly a tough decision to make.
