Bill Belichick and the UNC Tar Heels take a break from the Jordon Hudson saga and land the potential future of the program

When you think about head coach Bill Belichick and the UNC Tar Heels program right now, the only thing people want to talk about right now is the distraction that his relationship with Jordon Hudson has created. Believe it or not, Coach Belichick is busy building up the program for the present and future. That includes on the recruiting trail, where the program earned a big commitment on Wednesday.

2026 Loganville (Ga.) Grayson quarterback opted for the Tar Heels over finalists Auburn and NC State. North Carolina was able to tap into the state of Georgia, one of the very best areas for developing next level talent. Along with Bryce Baker in the 2025 class, the program has some exciting talent in that quarterback room for the future.

Despite some awesome tools and production, Burgess remains very underrated from a recruiting rankings perspective. He is rated as a three-star player by every major recruiting platform. Burgess is currently considered to be the No. 501 overall player, No. 30 quarterback, and No. 59 player in the state of Georgia for the 2026 recruiting class according to the 247Sports Composite ranking.

Those rankings haven't stopped a long list of programs from pursuing Burgess. The Georgia standout currently holds scholarship offers from the Tar Heels, Auburn, Arizona State, Utah, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, NC State, Mississippi State, Pittsburgh, Boston College, Georgia Tech, and Duke among many others.

Burgess was the starting quarterback for an extremely talented 14-1 Grayson team last year as a junior. The 6-5, 210-pound passer managed to throw 2,255 yards and 23 touchdowns for the offense, also adding another 596 yards and four more scores on the ground. He also was able to be careful with the football, only throwing four interceptions while averaging a healthy 10.3 yards per carry.

When you watch Burgess' film, his rankings are pretty odd. While he might be a little raw as a player, his size and arm strength immediately pop off of the screen. For a taller player, Burgess also has some good acceleration as a runner. That combination should have a lot of Tar Heel fans really excited for the long term developmental upside.
