After a promising start to his tenure as the North Carolina Tar Heels football coach, Bill Belichick could be gone without even coaching a single game.
The eight-time Super Bowl coach surprised the world when he decided to join the Tar Heels in the middle of the 2024 season. After spending 24 years with the New England Patriots, Belichick tried different things, including being more present and open to the media, appearing on TV shows and podcasts.
It hasn't even been a year and Belichick finds himself in trouble with the program's authorities. His 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, has made things difficult for Belichick.
She drew a lot of attention when a TV interview with CBS Morning went viral on social media due to Hudson's constant interruptions and reluctance to let Belichick tell details about their relationship. She reportedly stormed out of the room at one point, which only added fuel to the speculation.
On Friday, a report suggested the university had banned Hudson from its facilities due to all the controversies she had starred in. They rejected that report shortly after, but the situation isn't 100% finished.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk wrote on Saturday that Belichick's future at Chapel Hill could be in jeopardy given the latest development regarding his girlfriend. The analyst recalls that June 1 is a key date to know whether he'll go through his first season with the team or try something different.
"On that day — only three weeks from tomorrow — the payment necessary for Belichick to exit the deal plummets from $10 million to $1 million.
"Initially, that reduction was viewed as a quick and easy path for Belichick to get back to the NFL. Now, it becomes Belichick’s potential escape hatch from what may have become a bad relationship."
Many thought this buyout clause was included in case Belichick drew interest from NFL teams during the coaching carousel. Now, it could be an emergency exit for the legendary coach after a tumultuous couple of weeks.
