New England Patriots legend Bill Belichick will have a new boss at the University of North Carolina in 2026, assuming he stays at the program for more than a year.

Steve Newmark will take over the UNC athletics director role, with Bubba Cunningham stepping down next summer.Cunningham will take on a new position as the athletic director's and chancellor's senior advisor. He’s served as the athletic director since 2011.

After graduating from the University of Virginia with a legal degree, Newmark began his career in sports as a shareholder at Charlotte, North Carolina-based Robinson, Bradshaw & Hinson, P.A. His areas of expertise were private equity, mergers & acquisitions, and sports and entertainment.

He’s spent the last 15 years as president of Roush Fenway Keselowski (RFK) Racing and is expected to step into his new role on Aug. 15 as executive associate athletics director.

Newmark is a Chapel Hill native and was on the advisory committee that hired Belichick in the offseason, as well as the committee that hired the Rams Club executive director.

"Like many passionate Tar Heel fans, avidly following UNC Athletics has represented a special and unique bond with my family and friends since childhood, and I recognize the role it serves for the university, alumni, community, and broader fan base," Newmark said in a statement.

"I look forward to working with Bubba and the entire Tar Heel Nation to continue to elevate UNC's status as a premier brand in college sports with top-tier programs across the board and with student-athletes who represent North Carolina's flagship institution with class, on and off their respective playing fields."

RFK racing currently employs three cars in NASCAR’s top series with drivers Brad Keselowski (who is also a co-owner of the team along with the Fenway Sports Group and Jack Roush), Chris Buescher, and Ryan Preece.

Because NASCAR teams rely heavily on corporate sponsorships, Newmark’s experience in securing sponsorship deals is expected to complement the current NIL landscape within college athletics.
