Bill Belichick Isn't Being Honest About His Stance In New England

The feud between Bill Belichick and his former team took an interesting turn this weekend when it was reported that the six-time Super Bowl champ banned New England Patriots scouts from attending UNC practices.

Speaking to reporters after his first college win over the Charlotte 49ers, Belichick opened up about his decision — which some argue is hurting his players.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s clear that I’m not welcome around their facility,” Belichick explained, via the Tar Heel Tribune. “And so they’re not welcome at ours. Pretty simple.”

However, as Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk explains, that doesn't really appear to be the case.

Belichick's pettiness is 'flawed'

As the NBC Sports columnist writes, there's no evidence that exists right now that the Patriots have taken any such action against their ex-coach.

And despite Belichick's fractured relationship with Patriots owner Robert Kraft, the franchise has maintained that a statue of Bill will still reside in Foxborough one day.

"The Patriots have done nothing to demonstrate he’s not welcome at their facility. Sure, they fired him," Florio said. "But that doesn’t mean he can’t go there, if for some reason his current job necessitated a visit to Gillette Stadium."

"Indeed, only months after Belichick’s employment ended, the Patriots invited him to speak at the Tom Brady Hall of Fame enshrinement, before a packed house. He had a table on the floor for himself and family/friends, next to owner Robert Kraft’s table," he noted.

"And Kraft recently said that, yes, a statue will be erected outside the stadium after Belichick’s coaching career ends."

What this means for UNC's players

Obviously, the ones caught in the crossfire here are North Carolina's players who will have less exposure to NFL decision-makers as they eye potential pro football careers.

It also doesn't help Belichick's hopes of ever getting back into the National Football League by making it harder on a team's scouts to do their jobs.

It's not clear what the NFL legend's end game is here, but it's hard to imagine this relationship won't take more twists and turns before things are all said and done.
