Though the football team continues to sink, Bill Belichick and the University of North Carolina are putting on a united front.
Belichick and UNC released a joint statement on Wednesday night. In the statement, each side affirmed its continued commitment to the other.
“I’m fully committed to UNC Football and the program we’re building here,” read Belichick’s part of the statement.
“Coach Belichick has the full support of the Department of Athletics and University,” read the UNC portion, courtesy of Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham.

It appears that the statement was a response to a bombshell report earlier in the day claiming that the Tar Heels were already considering a Belichick “exit strategy.”
North Carolina is now off to a subpar 2-3 start to the season, their first with the six-time Super Bowl champion Belichick as their head coach. Last week, the Tar Heels got trounced by Clemson by a 38-10 final score, and UNC fans were completely fed up after the game. Belichick himself also did not help matters by making some polarizing comments in his postgame press conference.
It is clear that all of the previous excitement about the Belichick era has completely given way to mass frustration, especially in light of some of the recent unflattering reports that have emerged about the 73-year-old coach as well.
That said, North Carolina signed Belichick to a five-year, $50 million contract over the offseason. The contract comes with a mammoth buyout of at least $20 million, according to reports, but Belichick can trigger a release on his end too by paying $1 million in liquidated damages to the university. Though Belichick continues to attract negative publicity, primarily because of his 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson, it looks like both coach and university will ride out this storm together.
