The Boise State Broncos are using their signature blue playing surface to help strengthen the football program through NIL deals.
Since 1986, the Boise State Broncos have used a blue turf at Albertsons Stadium. They’re among the handful of teams that used a unique colored playing surface. Other clubs that do so include the Eastern Washington Eagles (red playing surface at Roos Field) and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (teal playing surface at Brooks Stadium).
2026 will mark the Broncos’ first season in the Pac-12 Conference, having spent the previous 14 years in the Mountain West Conference. As the Broncos prepare for the transition, they’re also changing the playing surface at Albertsons Stadium.
Per Larry Holder of The Athletic, the Broncos are auctioning off pieces of their old playing surface through CollectU. A 400-square-foot sheet of the playing surface has already sold for $25,000, Holder reported.
In a statement, Boise State athletic director Jeramiah Dickey explained that they’re auctioning off pieces of the old playing surface to help fund NIL deals:
“How much the industry is changing, it’s my job to continue to invest in our program, and to do that, I need resources. You’re going from a place of stretching dollars to how do you make more and how do you set up your infrastructure in your department to do so to take advantage of opportunities…This is low-hanging fruit. We know that every seven to nine years, we’re going to have to change out the blue (turf). We know the blue has power.”
For those wondering, don’t worry. The Boise State Broncos’ new playing surface will also have blue colors.
Despite losing superstar running back and Heisman Trophy finalist Ashton Jeanty (sixth overall to the Las Vegas raiders) in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Broncos finished last season with a 9-5 record.
Spencer Danielson’s Broncos crushed the UNLV Rebels in the Mountain West Conference Football Championship Game, before losing to the Washington Huskies in the LA Bowl by a final score of 38-10.
Boise State will kick off the 2026 season with a road game against the Oregon Ducks on Sept. 5. The Ducks reached the College Football Playoff National Championship semifinal, losing to eventual champions Indiana. After visiting Oregon, Boise State will return home to host the Memphis Tigers on Sept. 12.
