The news of sophomore defensive back Boo Carter entering the NCAA Transfer Portal earlier this week sent some shockwaves across the college football landscape. While there seemingly was some friction between him and coach Josh Heupel as Carter lost a starting spot, things did not appear on the outside looking in as sour as it seemingly got.
Carter explained his side of the situation, so let’s take a deeper dive into what happened between Carter and the Tennessee Volunteers to force a split.
While speaking to John Brice of Football Scoop, Boo Carter explained the few days ahead of entering the NCAA Transfer Portal and how he was still dealing with a hip injury.
“I told them (Vols coaches) throughout the week that my hip flexor was still messed up. Friday, they told me to just go home and that was that. I had a meeting before we had film, before we leave for the hotel. Me and (coach Josh) Heupel had a meeting then met with Coach Banks and Coach ‘Nez and Coach Heup and they told me that from that point on, all they said was to go home and we’ll reach out to you.
“I heard from them (Sunday). Basically, they said we are done and if you have any other questions you can talk to the administrator. Basically, they dismissed me from the team, kicked me off the team basically.”
Carter was still appreciative of the two-plus years he spent with the Vols and still is just baffled that it has reached the end so soon.
“It was a great time at Tennessee, two years, but the season ended short for me. I’ll just say goodbye from that point on. Like to me, I’m confused. I don’t really know what’s going on about dismissed or the extra stuff he said in the media with me in the locker room or following the rules or standard. I’ve been doing everything I could. I told him I was hurt. He wanted me to play hurt throughout the whole season. I don’t know, how he’s putting it is making it sound like the stuff that happened in fall camp still [has an impact in November].”
Carter has shown the ability to be a force as he has recorded 63 tackles (44 solo, 19 assisted) with three pass deflections, two sacks, three forced fumbles, and one interception on defense. He also has stepped up as a punt returner with 23 punt returns for 343 yards, but never found the end zone. With a lot of talent and multiple years of eligibility remaining, it will be intriguing to see which teams are going to zero in on landing him in the transfer portal following the season.
