The Michigan Wolverines have yet to name a starting quarterback ahead of the team's season opener against the New Mexico Lobos on Aug. 30. While there may not have been a formal announcement, it appears a clear leader has emerged in the weeks leading up to the college football season.
Highly touted five-star Bryce Underwood is competing against Mikey Keene, Jake Garcia and Jadyn Davis. Yet, it does not appear to be much of a competition.

On3's Josh Henschke reported that there is "no question" that Underwood will be the team's starting quarterback when the season starts. Underwood had a solid debut in Michigan's first preseason scrimmage.

"Bryce Underwood had a good day, we’re told," Henschke wrote on Saturday. "From spring to fall, it’s clear that his game has improved as he adjusts to the college game, and there should be no question that he’s going to be the starter on day one.
"Outside of Underwood, the big question is who could take meaningful back-up snaps. Both Jadyn Davis and Jake Garcia had their moments. However, Underwood is going to make this offense run. Mikey Keene is still working his way back, it appears, as he took some reps but not full ones."
Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore has been quiet when it comes to naming a starting quarterback. Moore continues to emphasize it is an open quarterback competition but has been complementary of Underwood, comparing the freshman to former Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy.
“As far as pure size, it’s way different, because he’s 6-4, and he’s 230 pounds now,” Moore noted during an offseason interview on the "Cover 3 Podcast," per Yahoo Sports. “But mentality wise, pretty similar in the mentality of what they want to do and how they want to be.
"How they go about their business, pretty similar, and attacking things off the field and being great teammates, and both of them were loved by their teammates.”
