The Michigan Wolverines head into the 2025 college football season in a pretty interesting position. Head coach Sherrone Moore was thrown into the fire before last season, and we saw some ups, and a whole lot of downs as well. This is a younger roster, and there could once again be some growing pains this upcoming season.
There is also, however, plenty of talent to work with. We could very well see a ton of signs for growth, and Wolverine fans everywhere can be sold on the overall development track for this program. They must avoid several potential hurdles, which could seriously limit their success in 2025.
It feels like most people are predicting a similar quarterback track for the Wolverines, a few games of Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene, and then Underwood will take over. The five-star freshman is incredibly talented, and he has a huge price tag to live up to. The 6-4, 208-pound signal caller is viewed as the potential savior of this program, and Underwood won’t be able to hide from those expectations, even if he wants to.
For the short term, someone like Underwood would give this Wolverine team a huge boost. His dual threat ability could, at least in theory, make up for some question marks for the offense overall. While Keene looks like a solid bridge quarterback, Underwood not being ready at some point in 2025 does seriously limit the team’s ceiling. The team really needs him this fall at some point.
Whether it is Underwood or Keene behind center for the majority of the 2025 season, odds are that they will have to try and elevate the overall talent around them. The running back position should be very strong, but wide receiver is a much different story. They will be depending on players like former Indiana transfer Donaven McCulley to take substantial steps forward, and become playmakers. Wide receiver has a chance to be the worst overall position group for the Wolverines this season on the entire roster.
Coach Moore hasn’t been put into the most advantageous position so far. Following Jim Harbaugh as the Michigan head coach, especially coming off of a national championship, can’t be easy. Add in that this was Coach Moore’s first head coaching job, and he walked into a lot of scrutiny and even more investigations, it feels like a bit of a lose-lose situation. Moore will get some time to figure it out and get this program back on solid footing, but there’s no telling if he is the right guy for the job or not, at least right now.
