(Cue the sad trombone.)

BYU moved to the Big 12 in 2023, started 5-2, and fizzled out with five straight losses to close out the year, finishing with just the second losing record since 2004.

But there was a reason.

Out of the seven losses in BYU’s first season in the Big 12, one was against a Texas squad that went to the four-team College Football Playoff, two were against ten-win teams, and two more were against nine-win teams. The finishing kick was a bear.

But there was a reason BYU went 11-2 last year, too.

In the opposite of 2023, six of the last seven regular season games, and eight overall, were against teams that ended up with losing records.

There’s no dogging an 11-win season in a Power Four conference.

Fine, so the schedule was nowhere near as hard as the 2023 version, but BYU was SMU’s only loss until December.

Kansas State was terrific, Baylor was solid, and while Colorado was brutally overloved and overrated, it was still a nine-win team that played like it had nine men on the field in an embarrassingly easy Alamo Bowl win for the Cougars.

The 2025 team will be somewhere in the middle of 2023 and 2024.

It’s a good team with a lot to like. The skill parts are great, the defense that was the best in the Big 12 will be great, and the kicking game is special.
