The BYU offense was fine. Not amazing, but fine.
It didn’t run well, was pedestrian through the air, and overall, it finished 11th in the Big 12, averaging 392 yards per game.
But it scored well over 100 points more than it did in 2023, was strong when it had to be, it managed to stay in control of games even though it wasn’t any good on third downs, and it hit on enough big plays to overcome most of the negatives.
There’s more than enough back to be even better, starting with …

- Jake Retzlaff is back, and maybe this time he’ll be appreciated. In a conference last year loaded with dangerous quarterbacks, Retzlaff was among the most effective.
He threw 12 picks, but he ran well, with over 400 yards and six scores, and threw for almost 3,000 yards with 20 scores. More than anything else, he had a knack for coming through in the clutch.
Bear Bachmeier (Stanford) is an interesting option to push for the backup gig, but smallish baller McCae Hillstead should be the No. 2 early on.
- The BYU receiving corps will be terrific. Chase Roberts is the top target on the outside, Parker Kingston will take on a bigger role after making 13 grabs, and Jojo Philips is coming off a year averaging over 21 yards per catch. Tiger Bachmeier (Stanford) will find a role somewhere, and Tei Nacua is a sleeper option to make a big splash.
Carsen Ryan (Utah) is the team’s best transfer, with All-Big 12 potential if he starts getting the ball more.
- LJ Martin will be one of the better backs in the Big 12. He’s a 6-2, 225-pound thumper who averaged over five yards per carry, with 718 yards and seven scores despite missing a few games hurt. The depth is fine, with Sione Moa and Pokaiaua Haunga two good young backs who’ll be used more in the rotation.
- The line was just okay, and it’ll be a work in progress in fall camp. Weylin Lapuaho is back at one guard gig, and 6-6, 315-pound Isaiah Jatta will start again at one of the tackles. Everything else might depend on whether or not Kyle Sfacioc (Southern Utah) takes over a guard spot to put everything else in place.
