Utah had an impressive 2025 season, going 10-2 and finishing third in the Big 12. The Utes have consistently been a winning program under Kyle Whittingham. With Whittingham stepping down after the Las Vegas Bowl against Nebraska, the program’s future is uncertain. Utah is also losing both its star offensive tackles to the NFL. Spencer Fano and Caleb Lomu formed the best tackle duo in college football this season. Lomu has been the Utes’ starting left tackle for the past two seasons and is one of the best offensive linemen in the 2026 NFL Draft. What makes him such a highly-touted prospect, and how does his game fit best at the next level?
Height – 6-foot-6
Weight – 308 pounds
Lomu was a four-star recruit coming out of Highland (Arizona) and the 14th-ranked offensive tackle in the Class of 2023. He committed to Utah and saw action in three games during his redshirt season. Lomu took over at left tackle in 2024, starting all 12 games as a redshirt freshman. He immediately showed the promise of a true blindside blocker, allowing just 17 pressures and two sacks on 425 pass blocking snaps. Lomu posted a 76.0 pass-blocking grade per PFF, and only improved in that department in 2025. He started all 12 games again as a redshirt sophomore and helped the Utes double their win total from the prior season. Lomu gave up no sacks and just eight pressures on 382 pass blocking snaps in 2025. His pass-blocking grade was an impressive 82.1 in 2025, according to PFF. Lomu has already declared for the 2026 NFL Draft.
Despite being a relatively young prospect, Lomu has shown advanced pass-blocking technique. His hand placement is incredible, allowing him to counter pass-rush moves consistently. He holds up well against bull rushes and can move pass rushers off their path. Lomu has great athleticism for the position and can quickly get to the second level as a run blocker. He can be used as a pulling blocker on run plays, and his athletic traits give him high upside as a zone run blocker. Lomu also displays a high football IQ, recognizing stunts and adjusting in pass protection reps.
While Lomu is elite in pass protection, there are times when he gets beaten by speed rushers. He is certainly a capable run blocker, but he isn’t great in that area. Lomu can struggle to find defenders on run plays and can improve at finishing reps as a run blocker. His frame is also a concern, as he is on the lighter end of offensive tackles. The technique is excellent, but how will he match up physically against more powerful NFL defensive ends?
Left tackle is one of the most valuable positions in all of football. Having a reliable blindside blocker to protect the franchise quarterback is vital for sustained success. Lomu has been incredible in pass protection, and his technique gives him a high floor. While his frame and run blocking raise questions, he has shown he can do the most important job at his position. He fits best in an offense that prioritizes a zone-run game, which better suits smaller, more athletic tackles. Lomu is an excellent fit for the 49ers, both because of the scheme and because they need to replace Trent Williams eventually. The 2026 NFL Draft has several first-round-caliber tackles. Lomu will likely be a late first-rounder and should be a reliable starter for many years.
