The Arizona State Sun Devils saw their 2024 season come to a close in crushing fashion, as they suffered a 39-31 loss to the Texas Longhorns in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on Wednesday. This was despite a starring performance from running back Cam Skattebo, who shared a surprising revelation about one of the top plays of the game.
Skattebo did a little bit of everything for the Sun Devils in this game, and it nearly led them to a huge upset victory. The superstar playmaker racked up 143 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries, while also being the team's leading receiver, catching eight passes for another 99 yards.
Skattebo also threw for a 42-yard touchdown pass to help make it a one score game for Arizona State late in the fourth quarter. On Thursday, Skattebo shared that he actually called an audible on the play so that he could take a deep shot for Malik McClain, and it ended up leading to a furious Sun Devils rally.
"It was actually supposed to be a throw back to the quarterback," Skattebo said on "The Dan Patrick Show." "I checked my receiver to a fade ball, and I'd seen him win inside, so I knew how to put it."

As if Skattebo's huge touchdown throw wasn't impressive enough, it turns out the initial play call wasn't even for him to throw the ball downfield. He recognized what Texas' defense was doing, though, and he took a shot for McClain (on 4th & 2 nonetheless) that resulted in Arizona State making it a one possession game.
Skattebo's big game ended up getting wasted, but he made a name for himself with his big time performance against the Longhorns. And with the 2025 NFL Draft looming in his future, it will be interesting to see where he ends up landing now that his stock is trending upward at a very fast rate.
