The Miami Hurricanes were extremely active during the winter transfer portal window, bringing in much-needed depth at several positions, and are expected to continue the trend once the spring window opens on Wednesday.
In what was a vital and perhaps the biggest acquisition for the Canes, former UGA starting quarterback Carson Beck transferred to Miami in early January after entering his name in the transfer portal with a "no contact" tag.
Beck was ranked the fourth most impactful transfer in the country and the second most impactful quarterback transfer on a list compiled by USA Today's For the Win.
The list ranks transfers based on how they could potentially impact their new teams, which may shape the 2025 college football playoff scenario.
After posting 3,485 passing yards, throwing a career high 28 touchdowns, and completing 64.7% of his passes in 2024, Beck immediately vaulted to the top of the list of available players after entering his name in the 247Sports transfer portal.
Beck finished last season with the 13th most passing yards in the land despite Georgia leading the nation in dropped passes at a 9.4% clip. The drops cost Beck 665 passing yards, which would have surpassed Cam Ward's 2024 total and career high of 4,313 yards.
Another reason for so much optimism in 2025 for Beck is the same reason why he enjoyed a successful 2023 campaign during his first year starting for the Bulldogs, when he fell just short of 4,000 passing yards.
Beck's main target was two-time Mackey Award recipient and current Las Vegas Raiders First-team All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers, who hauled in 56 passes for 714 and six scores in his final season at UGA.
At Miami, Beck will have a similar weapon at tight end who is expected to be a focal point of Miami's offense. Versatile sophomore Elija Lofton is primed to have a breakout season for the Hurricanes after grading out as the best true freshman tight end in the country with an 81.5 mark.
The Hurricanes' signal-caller will also be the beneficiary of playing behind one of the best and most experienced offensive lines in all of college football, a unit where Head Coach Mario Cristobal expects "four or five guys" to be taken in the 2026 NFL Draft.
But even with a top tier O-line, reliable threat at tight end, and formidable pieces at wide receiver and running back, the offense may fail to reach its true potential without a system tailor-made for Beck to prosper in.
Enter Shannon Dawson, who uses a fair share of bunch formations that stress defenses and generate favorable matchups for his receivers. He also places emphasis on creating space for his playmakers to operate in. Furthermore, Dawson believes in balance and will not abandon the run game, as he understands the value of running the ball with physicality to create big-play opportunities through the air.
The focus on creating space for playmakers and a commitment to a physical run game that opens up explosives downfield is where Beck fits in perfectly. He thrived in a similar system under former Georgia Offensive Coordinator Todd Monken in 2023.
Dawson and Monken's offensive ideologies resemble one another leaving every reason to believe Beck will produce much like he did when he led the Bulldogs to a 13-1 record two years ago.
If Miami remains in good health and its newly reconstructed defense plays up to standard, the schedule is favorable enough for Beck to navigate his team to play for the ACC title in December and earn a spot in the college football playoff.
